Treatment technique

Muscle Energy Techniques

Muscle energy techniques involve gentle muscle contractions against resistance provided by Bee. She guides you into a position, explains which direction to press, and asks you to relax between short contractions. You take an active role while Bee guides the movement and effort.

During an appointment

What it may feel like

The technique may feel like a gentle push followed by relaxation or a change in position. It is controlled movement rather than a workout. The amount of effort and range of movement are adjusted to your comfort, without asking you to push through pain.

Individual suitability

How Bee considers it

Bee may consider this approach when assessing stiffness, muscle tension, or a movement that feels restricted. Your health history and assessment guide the decision. If you are hypermobile, the conversation focuses on your individual movement needs rather than assuming that more flexibility is the goal.

Not sure which technique is right for you?

You don’t need to decide before booking. Your appointment starts with a conversation and assessment, so Bee can discuss an approach that fits your concerns and comfort.

Practical questions

About Muscle Energy Techniques

  • I’ll guide you into a position and ask you to gently press or move against resistance that I provide. These are short, controlled muscle contractions rather than a workout. I’ll explain the direction and timing so you know what to do.

  • You don’t need to arrive with a particular level of strength or flexibility. The technique uses controlled effort, with the position and intensity chosen around your assessment. If it doesn’t feel appropriate for you that day, we can consider another approach.

  • Please tell me. We can adjust the position, reduce the effort, pause, or choose a different technique. You don’t need to push through discomfort or reach a particular range of movement for the appointment to be worthwhile.

  • We’ll talk about your experience of hypermobility, your movement concerns, and what feels comfortable or uncomfortable. I won’t assume that more movement is what you need. Your history and assessment will help us decide whether this technique belongs in your appointment.
